More about Future Generations - Jane Davidson and Schumacher Wild

With a combined focus on well-being, resilient communities and renewable energy, the ‘Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015’, is a living prototype for local and global leaders, and proof that an inclusive and sustainable future is possible.

Our lead tutor Jane Davidson, the then Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing in Wales, proposed this first piece of legislation in history to place regenerative and sustainable practice at the heart of government. Unparalleled in scope and vision, the Act connected social, environmental, economic and cultural wellbeing with the aim of solving complex issues, through better decision-making.

Using Wales as a primary case study, this blended short course of online and residential learning, uniquely explores the insights and approaches taken. It brings together key actors involved in the Act and examines the regulatory approach from different perspectives including Government, FG Commissioner and public services. It will encourage us to assess the impact of the act and consider how this approach might be adapted within different settings.

Practical Information

There will be an online introduction to the Act ahead of the course, followed by a residential to explore the processes and practices. Please read the outline below:
Our course begins with an introduction to the proposal and development of the Act, this element of the course will be held online before the residential.

Our group will then come together for a 3-day residential in a co-exploration of the approach, processes and practices that have been developed in Wales as a result of the Act. This includes the work of the Future Generations Commissioner’s Office, and the Future Generations Leadership Academy 3.0, who share tools and knowledge to help organisations and public bodies become future-fit. We will also explore the work of the School of International Futures who help people transform the present using structured thinking about the future and Next Generation Foresight Practitioners (NGFP) who advocate diverse perspectives from younger generations in under-represented geographies and communities.

Finally, following the residential, participants will reconvene together online as a ‘community of practice’. This will enable participants to consider and review their own action plan and commitment to working for the wellbeing of current and future generations, through peer-led support.

Living Waters

Living Waters

11th March 2025 - 29th April 2025

An 8-week online course. A panpsychic view starts from the understanding that all things, including the Earth itself, are integral to the fabric of the living cosmos, all of the same sentient cloth. Mind is a fundamental aspect of matter just as matter is a fundamental aspect of mind: we are part of a world that has depth as well as structure, meaning as well as form. In Thomas Berry’s words, this is a community of subjects, not a collection of objects. During this 8 week online course, we will explore this perspective through a co-operative inquiry with Rivers in the vicinity of participants: if we invoke their living presence, address them as subjective persons, what manner of response might we receive? Rivers may include everything from mountain torrents through mature watercourses to tidal reaches; underground flows, wild streams or industrialised waterways. Please scroll down for a more in depth course description.
